My question is about 3D vs 2D usage of ichthyop. I ran two different test case :
1) 2D simulation using u_eastward, v_northward and zeta parameter extracted from a 3D ROMS simulation at a specific depth (50 m). I used ROMS_zview.m function to extract a z-level(horizontal level) at 50 m from 3D simulation
2) 3D simulation at the same depth (50 m) where vertical advection parameter was set to False so that the particles remain on approximately the same horizontal layer (50 m depth).
Although I expected the result of these two simulation to be similar, it was NOT!! The discrepancieis were not very much but still significant. I would apprecifcate any clarification on why this happens. Furthur, how reliable is the 3D module because when I set to vertical advection parameter to TRUE, some huge excursions happened to particles which was not relaistic.
By the way, Why doesn’t 3D module of ichthyop read w_velcotiy?
