For someone just starting out it seems the only jobs available are “rush” jobs. I get a lot of emails from people who need storyboards by “this weekend” or “next Friday” and most of them don’t mention anything about payment or negotiation. Is it safe to assume that most of these are scams or is this a common way beginning story artist get into the industry?
I see a lot of people on LinkedIn looking for artists to help with their projects. Most of them are no pay but you’ll receive credit. With someone who has little to no experience in the industry is it worth taking on these nonpaid projects for experience or is it better to just focus on your own portfolio with your own ideas and stories? How much does experience factor in when a studio HR rep look at your portfolio and resume?
How much time on average are you allowed to review a contract? A few days? A week? Would the extra time put the opportunity to get the job in jeopardy?
Can you share some tips on networking? Especially in a crowded event like a convention where you’re surrounded by people after the same thing?
Can you share with us how you got your first job? Did you get it just through applying or through networking?
These are awesome questions. In fact I planned to cover some of these in the next class.

My opinion is this…don’t ever take on a job for free. It’ll hurt you and others in the long wrong. I understand budgets are tight, but if you are going to work on something and not get paid…it might as well be your stuff for self improvement. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done stuff for free, but it’s usually for a few close friends and the understanding is everyone is doing it for free. If someone (not a close friend) needs funding for a storyboard artist or other positions…there’s kickstarter to help you get the funds.
I couldn’t agree more. There’s no reason to work for free.
