Storyboard Instructor
Remote · Part-Time · Independent Contractor · $55–65/hour · 5, 10, or 20 hours per month
You can tell in ten seconds whether a portfolio gets a callback. Most students can't.
They come out of school with drawings, not cinema: panels that look good but don't cut together, staging that stalls the scene, acting that's really just blocking. StoryboardArt exists to close that gap, and we need working professionals who can look at a board, see the problem, and show a student exactly how to fix it.
As a StoryboardArt instructor, you'll mentor serious students through revision-driven portfolio development, the same way a story supervisor develops a new artist on a show. The work is part-time, fully remote, and built around defined monthly assignments so it fits alongside production.
What You'll Do
- Review student storyboard assignments and give notes the way a supervisor would: specific, prioritized, and actionable.
- Guide students through revision passes until their sequences hold up to a professional standard.
- Coach the judgment calls that get artists hired: staging, acting choices, camera language, composition, continuity, and pacing.
- Explain how the job actually works: story room expectations, taking notes, pitching, and production workflows.
- Deliver feedback in the format that fits the work: written notes, recorded draw-overs, or group student sessions.
- Document student progress in our shared systems so every student knows their next step.
- Join occasional “Monthlies” sessions with other instructors to keep feedback consistent across the program.
What a Month Looks Like
At the 10-hour level, a typical month includes roughly 10-20 story assignment reviews with recorded draw-overs and written notes. Assignments and deadlines are set at the start of each month, so you know exactly what you're committing to before you commit.
Who We're Looking For
- 5+ years of professional storyboard or story artist experience in animation, live action, games, or a related field
- Credits, a portfolio, or a reel that shows it
- Fluency in Toon Boom Storyboard Pro and/or Photoshop
- The ability to say what's wrong and draw what's better
- Feedback that's direct and encouraging, the kind you wish you'd gotten earlier in your career
- Reliability: you hit review deadlines and flag conflicts early
Nice to have: teaching, mentoring, or supervising experience; familiarity with Autodesk Flow, Discord, Slack, or Google Drive.
Why Instructors Join
- Stay in the industry. This is built for working artists. Teach alongside production, not instead of it.
- Get sharper at your own job. Explaining why a sequence works is a supervisor's skill, and teaching builds it fast.
- Work with students who are serious. Our students commit to repeated practice and revision, and they actually apply your notes.
- Be part of a professional community. You'll work alongside other experienced story artists who care about developing the next generation.
- Get paid for your time, starting with the evaluation. No unpaid test boards.
How the Engagement Works
- Independent contractor, $55-65/hour based on experience, invoiced monthly.
- Recurring monthly assignments of approximately 5, 10, or 20 hours, based on program needs and your availability. Work is structured around defined deliverables, not guaranteed hours.
- Your engagement level can be adjusted between months, including stepping back during crunch with advance notice.
- If you're currently on staff or under contract at a studio, please check your agreement's outside-work policy. Many working artists teach on the side; we just want you covered.
How We Work
We hold instructors to the same standard we teach: deliver your best work, tell the truth respectfully, take notes without defensiveness, and solve problems before they become emergencies. Every student win strengthens the whole community, including the instructors.
We're not looking for people who can only spot what's wrong. We want instructors who can show students how to make the work better.
